Doubt, Frost/Nixon, Milk Score BFCA Nominations

The Broadcast Film Critics Association has announced nominations for its annual Critics Choice Awards, which will be presented on January 8 and aired live on VH1.

Milk topped the field with eight nominations, including nominations for Best Picture and Best Actor for Sean Penn. Doubt received six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay for John Patrick Shanley, acting nominations for Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Viola Davis, along with a Best Acting Ensemble nomination; while Frost/Nixon gathered four nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Ron Howard, Best Actor for Frank Langella, and Best Screenplay for Peter Morgan.

Other theater veterans who were nominated include Cate Blanchett (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married), Melissa Leo (Frozen River), and Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler).

On Monday, The Washington DC Area Film Critics Circle named Meryl Streep as Best Actress for her role in the film version of Doubt, and also honored the movie for Best Ensemble Cast (which includes co-stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis).

The group lavished four awards on Slumdog Millionaire, including Best Picture and Best Director (Danny Boyle) and two on Rachel Getting Married, for Best Supporting Actress Rosemarie DeWitt and Jenny Lumet for Best Original Screenplay. In addition, Mickey Rourke was named Best Actor for The Wrestler; Heath Ledger was named Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight; Wall-E was named Best Animated Feature; Let the Right One In was named Best Foreign Language Film; Man on Wire was named Best Documentary; and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button won the award for Best Art Direction.
