Casting has been announced for a one-performance-only staging of Shylock, Jacob Adler’s Yiddish version of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, to be offered on Sunday, May 22 at Temple Beth Emeth (83 Marlborough Road, Brooklyn). Lester Thomas Shane will direct the event, which will be performed in Yiddish with English supertitles.

In his adaptation, Adler strips Shakespeare’s original of its romantic aspects so that it concentrates solely on the character of Shylock and the contract he enters into with the merchant, Antonio.

The company will feature David Mandelbaum as Shylock, Allen Lewis Rickman as Antonio, Yelena Shmulenson as Portia, Hy Wolfe as Bassanio, Buzz Roddy as Graziano, and Alec Burko as Lorenzo.
