David Greenspan, Erik Lochtefeld, April Matthis, Sarah Tolan-Mee, and Amy Warren will star in playwright Sarah Ruhl and composer Todd Almond‘s Melancholy Play. Davis McCallum will direct the production, which will be performed at the Invisible Dog Art Center in Brooklyn, July 18-27.
Adapted from Ruhl’s 2001 farce of the same name, this chamber music production centers on Tilly, a beautiful and melancholy woman. Everyone she meets falls in love with her. Then one day she is suddenly happy–and things get very strange.
The work is presented under the aegis of the 13P collective, which operates under a unique model: Each writer serves as artistic director for his or her own project, selects what will be produced, decides on the goals of the project, designs its process, and chooses the collaborators.
The collective also includes Sheila Callaghan, Erin Courtney, Madeleine George, Rob Handel, Ann Marie Healy, Julia Jarcho, Young Jean Lee, Winter Miller, Kate E. Ryan, Lucy Thurber, Anne Washburn, and Gary Winter. Ruhl’s new work will be the final production by the 13P collective, which will then disband as originally intended.
