Former American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis will take over the role of Sammy in the Broadway musical The Wedding Singer in early September and concluding on November 11. He replaces original cast member Matthew Saldivar.
Maroulis has appeared throughout the U.S. and internationally as Roger in Rent, and appeared in the Williamstown Theatre Festival production of God of Vengrance. He has toured in concert with other American Idol finalists and is currently working on his debut CD.
Based on the popular film of the same name, The Wedding Singer opened on Broadway on April 27 and was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It tells the story of Robbie Hart, New Jersey’s most popular wedding singer, who begins to ruin other people’s nuptials after his fiancée leaves him at the altar. Things begin to look up after he meets Julia, a warm-hearted waitress — who is also engaged to be married.
Directed by John Rando and choreographed by Rob Ashford, the show features music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Beguelin and Tim Herlihy. The principal cast currently features Stephen Lynch, Tina Maddigan, Amy Spanger, Richard Blake, Felicia Finley, Kevin Cahoon, and Rita Gardner.
