Vineyard Theatre Artistic Director Douglas Aibel and Co-Artistic Director Sarah Stern have named Christopher Chen as the 2013 recipient of The Vineyard Theatre’s Paula Vogel Award for Playwriting. The award is named after playwright and teacher Paula Vogel, who penned The Long Christmas Ride and the Pulitzer Prize-winning How I Learned to Drive, both of which had their premieres at The Vineyard.

Chen, a San Francisco-based playwright, is the sixth recipient of this annual residency-based award. He will receive a cash prize as well as artistic development support throughout The Vineyard’s 2013-14 season. Chen’s past works include The Hundred Flowers Project, Into the Numbers, The Window Age, and others, and they have enjoyed productions with the American Conservatory Theatre, Central Works Theatre Ensemble, Silk Road Theatre Project, and many other international theater groups and festivals.

Drama Desk Award winner Kathleen Chalfant and Kate Mulgrew, stars of The Vineyard’s recent production of Jenny Schwartz’ Somewhere Fun, will host a luncheon on October 3 at the National Arts Club, where Vogel herself will present Chen with the award.
