The Education Department of Chicago Shakespeare Theater will receive the Folger Shakespeare Library’s Shakespeare Steward Award for Innovative Teaching of Shakespeare in American Classrooms.

The company is the first theater to receive this award, which is presented annually to an person or organization. Marilyn Halperin, the Director of Education at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, will accept the award on behalf of CST when it is presented on November 2. She will be joined by Jean-Claude Brizard, the Chief Executive Officer of Chicago Public Schools.

Among the company’s arts-in-education programs under the umbrella Team Shakespeare is the well-known CPS Shakespeare!, which brings together a citywide cast of students and their teachers to stage an adapted Shakespeare production, which is then presented at CST.
