Stage veteran and Oscar winner Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska will star in a new film adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novella Carol (aka The Price of Salt), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

John Crowley will direct the film, which has a script by Phyllis Nagy based on Highsmith’s story set in 1950s New York about the relationship between two very different women.

Blanchett will reprise her role as Yelena in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Uncle Vanya as part of the 2012 Lincoln Center Festival. Her many other stage credits include Gross und Klein, Hedda Gabler, and A Streetcar Named Desire.

She won the Oscar for The Aviator and received nominations for Elizabeth, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Notes on a Scandal, and I’m Not There.
