Breaking Through Set for First Performance at Pasadena Playhouse

The new musical makes its world premiere tonight.

The world premiere run of Breaking Through begins this evening at Pasadena Playhouse.

The musical follows a young, talented singer-songwriter, as she tries to achieve her dreams without losing herself amid the cutthroat industry of the music business. Her journey isn’t just an quest to become famous but also an attempt to get back to her authentic self. In the process, she rediscovers the music that truly makes her alive.

Artistic director Sheldon Epps directs the new musical, which features a book by Kirsten Guenther, music and lyrics by Cliff Downs and Katie Kahanovitz, and choreography by Tyce Diorio. Heading up the case are Alison Luff as Charlie Jane, Matt Magnusson as Scorpio, and Kacee Clanton as Karina. Joining them are Robert W. Arbogast as Jed Barnes, Will Collyer as Smith, Teya Patt as Gwyn, Katherine Tokarz as Liz, and Nita Whitaker as Amanda.

The creative team includes John Iacovelli (scenic design), Alex Jaeger (costume design), Jared Sayeg (lighting design), Peter Fitzgerald (sound design), and Kaitlyn Pietras (projection design).

Performances will run through November 22.
