The new musical by Duncan Sheik, Steven Sater, and Jessie Nelson is now running off-Broadway.
MCC Theater opened Duncan Sheik, Steven Sater, and Jessie Nelson's musical Alice by Heart on Tuesday, February 26.
Directed by Nelson with choreography by Rick and Jeff Kuperman, the production stars Molly Gordon, Mia DiLena, Zachary Downer, Noah Galvin, Ari Groover, Michael Hartung, Zachary Infante, Andrew Kober, Grace McLean, Nkeki Obi-Melekwe, Catherine Ricafort, Colton Ryan, Heath Saunders, Wesley Taylor, and Natalie Walker. Kim Blanck will join the production on March 5, replacing Obi-Melekwe who will depart the production to star in the title role of London's Tina – The Tina Turner Musical.
Alice by Heart, which is inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, is described as follows: "In the rubble of the London Blitz of World War II, Alice Spencer's budding teen life is turned upside down, and she and her dear friend Alfred are forced to take shelter in an underground tube station. When the ailing Alfred is quarantined, Alice encourages him to escape with her into their cherished book and journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland."
The creative team includes Edward Pierce (scenic design), Paloma Young (costume design), Bradley King (lighting design), Dan Moses Schreier (sound design), and J. Jared Janas (hair, wig, and makeup design), with orchestrations by Sheik, additional orchestrations by Simon Hale, and music direction and vocal arrangements by Jason Hart.
The production runs through April 7 at the Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space.
