August Strindberg Repertory Theatre and Negro Ensemble Company’s production of Strindberg’s Playing with Fire will move to the Gene Frankel Theatre from June 15-30 after it completes its previously announced run at New School for Drama on June 10.

Robert Greer directs the comedy, which features a new adaptation by Negro Ensemble Company executive director Leslie Lee, from a translation by Ulrika Brand. Presented with an all-black cast, the staging serves as the inaugural production of August Strindberg Repertory Theatre and will introduce them as a resident company of the Gene Frankel Theatre.

The cast includes James Edward Becton, Jaleesa Capri, Toccarra Cash, Elizabeth Flax, Jolie Garrett, and Nathan James. The design team features include Angelina Margolis (set design), Miriam Crowe (lighting design), Lora Jackson (costume design). Eszter Szalczer serves as dramaturg.

Originally set in a Swedish summer house in 1893, Lee’s adaptation takes place at a summer cottage in the Martha’s Vineyard neighborhood Oak Ridge, circa 1926. The play tells the story of a writer who finds himself embroiled in multiple love triangles when visiting friends for the summer.
