After a scorching run at New York City Center earlier this year in The Wild Party, Tony winner Adrienne Warren is preparing for two more New York stage gigs this month, her 92NY concert on June 1, and her Broadway return in Proof at the Booth Theatre. Ahead of both, we spoke to Warren about what to expect, and where she’s headed next.

The 92NY concert is your only concert this season. What can audiences expect?
92NY is my only concert in New York this season. I have a few other places and I love doing these shows so much.  I realized this is my first time doing this particular program in New York and I am very excited because it is a little insight to my story, my influences, how I have gotten to where I am now.  t’s my opportunity to connect with a New York audience in a different way.

You’re headed back to Broadway to play Claire in Proof.  How will you approach the role in a way that will differ from Kara Young?
I can’t wait to join this fantastic cast and production.  I saw the play a few weeks ago and was so moved by the performances. I am not sure how my approach will be different from Kara’s. What a beautiful force she is. To be stepping into any shoes once worn by Kara is an honor. I am such a fan and admirer.

I am always searching for truth with any role I play. I have a few similarities with the character Claire: we both left our families to move to the city to live and work and I am often traveling back home to see and take care of my family as well. I deeply understand the love and complications that come with this character and her relationship to her sister.

Looking backwards, do you ever wonder how you managed to sustain your performance as Tina Turner for so long, between London and New York?
In hindsight, I am actually not really sure how I did it. Sheer will and determination. I was also fueled by the love I have for Tina. I miss her everyday. The show was one of the hardest and most rewarding moments of my career thus far. I learned a lot.

Do you have a preference between stage and screen, plays or musicals?
I just love working on great art. Art that is transformative, culture bending, and fun. I am so grateful to have a career in theater, tv, and film. It truly is a dream and I must say I love them all in different ways. I love the comfort and teamwork of working in television, collaborating with a cast, crew and design team that become your family for that season. I love the adventure of film making, the ability to make bold choices and touch audiences around the world. I love theater because the entire industry is working to make something great that people respond to.  Even when I am not in a show that season I love cheering on my colleagues because making theatre is one of the hardest things to do in entertainment. I have such respect for the craft and the connection we make with audiences is unmatched.  I don’t care if I’m speaking or singing…it’s about what I am saying.
