The annual Drama League Awards luncheons are famous for being star-studded, and this year’s event — held on Friday, May 9 at the Grand Hyatt New York on 42nd Street — was no exception. Honored on this occasion were the Roundabout Theatre Company for Unique Contribution to the Theatre; Twyla Tharp for Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theatre; and Joe Mantello, who received the Julia Hansen Award for Excellence in Directing. Among the stars present for the glittering event: Harvey Fierstein (Hairpray) and Brian Dennehy (Long Day’s Journey Into Night).
Also on hand at the Hyatt: Marisa Tomei, more fully clothed here than she is during one key scene in Salome…
…John Selya standing still, something he rarely if ever does in Movin’ Out…
…J. Smith-Cameron, last seen in the Roundabout’s Tartuffe…
…Tammy Blanchard and David Burtka, the young stars of Gypsy…
…Victoria Hamilton and Eddie Izzard, a.k.a. Sheila and Bri in A Day in the Death of Joe Egg…
…the ever-beautiful Dina Merrill…
…Denis O’Hare (Take Me Out) and Michele Pawk (Hollywood Arms), who worked together in the first company of the Roundabout’s Cabaret…
…S. Epatha Merkerson, looking a lot happier than she did in Fucking A at the Public Theater…
…Linda Hart, a real nice lady who plays a total bitch in Hairspray…
…Matthew Morrison (Hairspray‘s Link Larkin)…
…and Liev Schreiber, last seen in The Mercy Seat Off-Broadway and next to be seen in Henry V at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park this summer.
Broadway newcomer Antonio Banderas (Nine) was one of the most popular people at the Drama League luncheon (big surprise). Here he is with Marissa Jaret Winokur of Hairspray…
…here he is with Mary Stuart Masterson, one of his gorgeous co-stars in Nine…
…and here he is getting an interesting reaction from Helen Hunt of Life (x) 3.
