NEWS FLASH: Teresa and T.V. Carpio Discuss Broadway's Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark
T.V. Carpio became involved with the musical after working with original director Julie Taymor on the film Across the Universe. During Spider-Man's development process, Carpio essayed three roles in separate workshops, a member of the now-cut Geek Squad, Mary Jane Watson and Arachne, the role she currently plays in the Broadway production. Arachne has undergone a number of changes since the production began previews in November, 2010, and now serves as a guardian angel for hero Peter Parker.
Like a number of cast members, Carpio admitted that a mid-performance injury in March had kept her on the sidelines for a few weeks. During a fight scene (now removed from the musical) with Spider-Man, she was stricken with whiplash when one of the actors who plays the masked hero jumped too quickly and hit her neck. A choke hold move as the battle continued exacerbated her condition. The injury was similar to one she sustained while performing in the musical Rent, when, she said, a fellow cast member had also hit her neck by mistake. Her mother advised her to take some time off from Spider-Man to relax and feel better, but T.V. admits to having gone "stir crazy" while not performing.
Teresa Carpio, who recently served as the head judge and vocal coach on the Chinese version of the televised singing competition The Voice, said was still receiving phone calls from the Chinese media congratulating her on her daughter's achievement on Broadway. "We're very privileged to be part of the audience and also very privileged that my daughter is a part of it, and I'm just very thankful," she said.
