Mike Daisey’s The Agony And The Ecstasy of Steve Jobs Will Play As Scheduled at Public Theater

The New York premiere of Mike Daisey’s The Agony And The Ecstasy of Steve Jobs will begin preview performances on October 11 at the Public Theater as scheduled, and run through November 13, with an opening on Monday, October 17. Jean-Michele Gregory directs the production.

Following the death yesterday of Apple founder Steve Jobs, there was some speculation that the production would be postponed or canceled.

Addressing the issue, The Public’s artistic director Oskar Eustis says in a statement, “All of us at The Public send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Steve Jobs, and we wish them courage and comfort at this time of loss. The Public is a theater committed to creating work that exists in vibrant discourse with the way we live now, and we support and encourage artists who take on the task of ‘showing the age its form and pressure,’ to quote Hamlet. Mike Daisey is such an artist, a brave and brilliant practitioner of theater that matters. For such an artist, and such a theater, it is inevitable that reality and drama will intersect in surprising, sometimes uncomfortable ways. This isn’t to be regretted; it’s to be celebrated.”

In the solo play, Daisey illuminates the war — from China to Silicon Valley — over how we see our world, and the human price we pay for our high-tech toys.
