Huber, Learned, Provenza, Spano, Weitz, et al. Set for Rubicon Season
The Rubicon Theater of Ventura, California has announced the line-up for its 10th anniversary season.
The season begins with George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy You Can’t Take It With You, directed by Jenny Sullivan (November 15-December 23). The cast includes Harold Gould as Grandpa Vanderhof, Bruce Weitz as Mr. DePinna, Robin Gammell and Robin Pearson Rose as Paul and Penny Sycamore, John Bennett Perry and Amanda McBroom as Mr. and Mrs. Kirby, Dan Gunther as Wilbur Henderson, Joseph Fuqua as Ed, Karyl Lynn Burns as Olga, Winslow Corbett as Alice, and Bets Malone as Essie.
Next up, Emmy Award winner Joe Spano returns to Rubicon in R. Buckminster Fuller: The History (and Mystery) of the Universe, directed by D.W. Jacobs (January 17-February 10). Filled with poetry, song, dance, comic antics, lecture, and conjecture, the play is a thought-provoking piece about an American icon. Rubicon is producing it in association with Z Space in San Francisco, and a regional tour will follow the run at Rubicon.
The season continues with a production of William Inge’s classic drama Bus Stop, directed by Brian McDonald (February 21-March 16), and a revival of Steve Martin’s Obie-Award-winning comedy Picasso at the Lapin Agile, starring Paul Provenza and directed by William Keeler (April 3-27).
Two offerings from the Festival of New American musicals come next: Scott Schwartz’s adaptation of Willa Cather’s novel My Antonia features a score by his father, Oscar winner Stephen Schwartz. Shiva Rose and Kevin Kilner will play the lead roles of Antonia and Jim (May 8-June 1). That show will be followed by It’s Only Life, a revue of music by John Bucchino, directed by Daisy Prince (June 19-July 12).
Concluding the season are the world premiere of David Rambo’s comedy The Spin Cycle, directed by James O’Neil and starring Eric Lange and Michael Learned (July 31-August 24), and a revival of the Sheldon Harnick-Jerry Bock musical She Loves Me, with Broadway stars Kim Huber and Roger Befeler as two competitive clerks in a Budapest parfumerie who become secret pen pals and then fall in love with each other (September 4-28).
