The Broadway community will mourn the loss of Tony-nominated theater director and actor Nicholas Martin on May 2 at 7:45pm, when Broadway marquees will be dimmed for one minute. Martin died on Wednesday at the age of 75.

"Nicky Martin spent his life dedicated to the theatre," said Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of the Broadway League, in a statement. "I felt fortunate that I was able to get to know him last year during Tony Awards season when he was nominated for Best Direction of a Play for Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike — a lovely last act to a long and prolific career directing and acting on stage. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues."

In addition to Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, the esteemed director also helmed productions of Present Laughter, Butley, Match, and Hedda Gabler on Broadway. Martin served as artistic director at two theater companies: Boston's Huntington Theatre Company, from 2000 to 2008, and Williamstown Theatre Festival, from 2008 to 2010.
