Matt Rawle, Emma Williams, Adam Levy, and Lesli Margherita will head the cast of the musical Zorro, which will begin an open-ended West End engagement at the Garrick Theatre on June 30, with an official opening on July 15. It will be directed by Christopher Renshaw, designed by Tom Piper, and choreographed by Rafael Amargo.
The show is based on the bestseller by Isabelle Allende, who is also producing the show, and features a score by the Grammy Award-winning band Gipsy Kings. The creative team also includes co-composer and musical arranger John Cameron and author Stephen Clark.
Created in 1919 by pulp writer Johnston McCulley, Zorro — the secret identity of Don Diego de la Vega — is a fictional wealthy caballero who defends the people of Spanish California against injustice. Allende’s 2005 novel reveals how the young Diego de la Vega became Zorro, weaving together Spanish and Californian history, Native American legend, mythic folk tales, and pirate adventures.
