The line up for the Getty Villa Theater Lab Series has been announced. The series features works-in-progress versions of new translations of Greek and Roman plays as well as contemporary works inspired by ancient theater. One of the highlights is Carey Perloff’s staging of Timberlake Wertenbaker’s new translation of Sophocles’ Elektra (September 2 – October 2).

The Lab Series will also include Proyecto Azteca (May 14-16), a multilingual multimedia piece that reflects on the encounter between Aztecs and Europeans and draws upon Octavio Paz’s poem The Sun Stone (Piedra del Sol); script-in-hand readings of Euripides’ Helen (March 5-6), directed by Jon Lawrence Rivera, and Aristophanes’ The Frogs (March 19-20), directed by Matt Walker; and Big Dance Theatre’s staging of Euripides’ Alkestis, which will use Anne Carson’s translation of the play about Herakles’ battle with Death for the soul of an ideal woman.
