Trevor Nunn to Direct Stage Adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’ Birdsong

Trevor Nunn will direct Rachel Wagstaff’s stage adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’ 1993 novel Birdsong, to run September 18 – January 15 at the West End’s Comedy Theatre.

The book is part of a trilogy from Faulks, which also includes The Girl at the Lion d’Or and Charlotte Gray. Birdsong centers on a man who, while staying as the guest of a factory owner in pre-war France, embarks on a passionate affair with the wife of his host. The action then shifts forward to World War I when the man returns to France to fight, and finds that his enduring love for the woman gives him strength to forge on in battle.

Wagstaff has previously adapted Faulks’ The Girl at the Lion d’Or for BBC Radio 4. Her other stage credits include Only the Brave and The Soldier.

Nunn, a former artistic director of both the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, is currently represented on Broadway with the revival of A Little Night Music. He recently directed Inherit the Wind and will be directing the forthcoming revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love.
