Michaels received Tony nominations for his plays Tchin-Tchin (1963) and Dylan (1964), as well as for his book to the musical Ben Franklin in Paris (1965), for which he also wrote the lyrics. Other Broadway credits include the book for the musical Goodtime Charley and the play Tricks of the Trade.
His Hollywood work includes co-authoring the screenplay for the 1968 film, The Night They Raided Minsky’s and a 1967 television adaptation of Carousel.
He is survived by his wife, Louisette; a sister, Meryle Ober; a son, Cotter and his wife Jennifer Jennings; a daughter, Candia Steen; and six grandchildren.
