Jackson will take on the title role in Shakespeare’s tragedy.
2018 Tony winner Glenda Jackson will return to Broadway next spring as the title role in a new production of William Shakespeare's King Lear.
Previews will begin Wednesday, March 6, 2019, with opening night set for Thursday, April 11. Theater, casting, and creative team are still to be announced. King Lear will be produced by Scott Rudin.
Jackson performed the title role in King Lear at London's Old Vic in 2016, her first stage appearance after 23 years of serving as a member of Parliament. This forthcoming Broadway production is unrelated to that staging.
"Performing King Lear in London was a wonderful and fulfilling experience, but this is a role you continue to work on and to make new discoveries," Jackson said in a statement. "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to explore the role anew, and look forward to the challenge of performing it on Broadway."
Jackson recently completed a run in Edward Albee's Three Tall Women, for which she received Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama League Awards for her performance.
