Two-time Tony nominee Andy Karl (On the Twentieth Century) is set to star as meteorologist Phil Connors in the world premiere of a musical based on the movie Groundhog Day at London's Old Vic later this year, according to published reports. The production will transfer to Broadway in 2017, with its first performance on January 23 and opening night set for March 9.

As previously reported, the show will feature music by Matilda composer Tim Minchin and will be helmed by Matilda director Danny Rubin. It will have a book by original screen writer Danny Rubin. Peter Darling is set to choreograph.

Groundhog Day is inspired by the 1993 film that tells the story of Pittsburgh weatherman Phil Connors, who finds himself caught in a time loop that forces him to repeat the same day, Groundhog Day, over and over.

Karl received Tony nominations for his roles in last year's On the Twentieth Century and 2014's Rocky. He has also appeared in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Jersey Boys, Wicked, and more Broadway shows.
