Sir Derek Jacobi to be Honored at DC’s Helen Hayes Awards

British actor Sir Derek Jacobi will be given the Helen Hayes Tribute at the 24th Annual Helen Hayes Awards, which honor the best of Washington D.C.-area theater, on Monday, April 28 at the Warner Theater.

In competitive categories, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company received the most nominations with 23, followed by Signature Theatre with 21. Among musicals, Signature’s The Witches of Eastwick picked up six nominations, as did The Women of Brewster Place at Arena Stage and Reefer Madness: The Musical at Studio Theatre 2ndStage. Non-musical nominations were led by Synetic Theatre’s Macbeth, which took a total of 12 nominations, including Outstanding Resident Play. Sarah Ruhl’s Dead Man’s Cell Phone, which premiered at Woolly Mammoth, received seven nominations.

Jacobi is a previous Hayes Award winner for his work in Cyrano de Bergerac and Breaking the Code. He will appear later this year at London’s Donmar Warehouse in Twelfth Night and is known worldwide for his starring role in the TV series I, Claudius.
