Patti Smith Wins National Book Award for Just Kids

Music legend Patti Smith has won the National Book Award for nonfiction for her memoir Just Kids, according to a report on EW.com. The book centers on her life in New York in the 1970s and her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

Smith co-wrote the play Cowboy Mouth with Sam Shepard, and has recorded numerous albums over the years.

The other Book Award winners are Jaimy Gordon for Lord of Misrule (fiction), Terrance Hayes for Lighthead (poetry), and Kathryn Erskine for Mockingbird (young people’s literature).
