The Weinstein Company has acquired the North American rights to Paulo Sorrento’s This Must Be the Place, according to a report in Variety. Sorrento has written the script for the movie with Umberto Contarello.
The movie, which premiered in Cannes, stars Sean Penn and Frances McDormand and centers on the story of an aging rock star (Penn), living in Dublin with his wife (McDormand), who leaves home for New York when he discovers that his father, a Holocaust survivor, is dying.
Penn’s Broadway credits include Heartland and Slab Boys. He has won Oscars for his work in Milk and Mystic River and received Academy Award nominations for his performances in I Am Sam, Sweet and Lowdown, and Dead Man Walking.
McDormand was seen on Broadway last season in Good People. Among her other Broadway credits are The Country Girl, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Awake and Sing!. She won an Academy Award for her performance in Fargo and has received Oscar nominations for Mississippi Burning, Almost Famous, and North Country.
