Stage director David Cromer is among the 2010 MacArthur Fellows, and along with the 22 other recipients, will receive $500,000 in “no strings” support over the next five years.

The fellowships, sometimes referred to as “genius grants,” are awarded to exceptional individuals across a range of disciplines. Cromer was specifically cited for “reinvigorating classic American plays with a spirit and urgency that eschews nostalgia and provides audiences with unexpectedly fresh and compelling theatrical experiences.”

Cromer received an Obie Award for his direction of Our Town and the production was also awarded 2009 Lucille Lortels for Outstanding Play Revival and Direction. Cromer made his Broadway directing debut with Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs, and his many other credits include the Off-Broadway productions of When the Rain Stops Falling and Adding Machine. He has been announced to direct the Broadway premiere of the musical Yank! and an upcoming Broadway revival of William Inge’s Picnic.
