Denzel Washington to Return to Broadway in August Wilson’s Fences

Academy Award winner Denzel Washington will star as Troy Maxson in a revival of August Wilson’s Fences on Broadway next spring, according to a report in The New York Times. A director, theater, further casting and scheduling will be announced at a later date.

The play, about an embittered former Negro League baseball player, is part of Wilson’s Pittsburgh Hill cycle. The original 1987 Broadway production starred James Earl Jones as Troy, and won the Tony Award, Pulitzer Prize, and other honors.

Washington last appeared on Broadway in 2005 as Brutus in Julius Caesar. Among his other stage credits: a production of Richard III at the Public Theater’s Delacorte Theater in Central Park. The actor received an Academy Award for best actor for Training Day in 2001, and for best supporting actor for Glory in 1989.
