The show will be produced by Kevin McCollum and Doug Morris, the chairman of Sony Music Entertainment, and directed by Charles Randolph-Wright. Casting and creative team will be announced shortly.
The show, which features a book by Gordy, will trace his rise in the music business, from a struggling songwriter to successful record executive, as well as explore how he shaped the careers of such superstars as Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson. It will include songs from the Motown catalog, along with a handful of new songs. No composer has been named.
Randolph-Wright's many directorial credits include Brian Stokes Mitchell's Broadway concert Love/Life along with productions of Sophisticated Ladies, Porgy & Bess, and Through the Night
