As part of its 30th anniversary celebration, the Vineyard Theatre is presenting a one-night-only benefit concert on June 17: Vineyard Celebrates the Songs of Dory Previn.
Dory Previn, who passed away in February, rose to prominence as a lyricist and songwriter in the 1970s. She released six pop/folk albums of original songs including On My Way to Where, Mary C. Brown and the Hollywood Sign, Mythical Kings and Iguanas, and Reflections in a Mud Puddle. She also wrote lyrics for a number of Oscar-nominated songs such as "You're Gonna Hear From Me" from Inside Daisy Clover and "Come Saturday Morning" from The Sterile Cuckoo. She and her husband at the time, composer André Previn, also collaborated on several other songs for film including "The Faraway Part of Town" from Pepe and "Theme from Valley of the Dolls."
The concert of her works will feature an all-star cast including Tony Award winner Michael Cerveris (Evita), Tony Award nominee Montego Glover (Memphis), Tony Award nominee Judy Kuhn (Passion), Nellie McKay (Big Hats), Tony Award nominee Jessie Mueller (The Mystery of Edwin Drood), Tony Award winner Stew (Passing Strange), Julia Greenberg (People Are Wrong!), and more still yet to be announced.
The benefit performance is produced in collaboration with Loraine Alterman Boyle and Julia Greenberg, with Jon Spurney serving as the evening's musical director.
