Universal May Turn American Idiot Into Feature Film

Universal Pictures is in talks about developing a feature film version of the Green Day musical American Idiot, which will conclude its Broadway run at the St. James Theatre on April 24, according to Deadline.com.

American Idiot, which follows a group of working-class characters, is directed by Michael Mayer, who co-wrote the musical's book with Green Day frontman Billie Jo Armstrong, and features orchestrations by Tom Kitt, and choreography by Steven Hoggett. The show has won the 2011 Grammy Award for "Best Musical Show Album," two 2010 Tony Awards, a Drama Desk Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award, among other honors.

Universal is in talks with Mayer to direct the film and with Oscar-winning screenwrtier Dustin Lance Black to pen the adaptation.

As previously reported, the first national tour of American Idiot will launch in the fall of 2011.
