Deaf West Theatre has announced the retirement of founding artistic director Ed Waterstreet and the appointment of David J. Kurs as the company’s new artistic leader.

Kurs has previously served as the company’s artistic associate, and was an associate producer and American Sign Language master on Deaf West productions of Pinocchio, My Sister in This House, and Children of a Lesser God.

Under Waterstreet’s leadership, the organization has produced 40 plays, four musicals, and became the recipients of 80 theater awards, including the Tony Honors for Excellence.
