Steppenwolf Theatre Company has announced that the previously reported John Mahoney will no longer star in the company’s production of Enda Walsh’s Penelope. Amy Morton directs the production, which will run December 1, 2011 – February 5, 2012.

In a statement, Steppenwolf Artistic Director Martha Lavey comments, “Due to an unexpected death in his family, John is traveling back to his home of Manchester, England immediately. Our hearts and prayers go out to John during this difficult time.”

Penelope is a reimagining of the Greek story about Odysseus’ wife waiting for her husband’s return. The production also features ensemble members Ian Barford and Yasen Peyankov with Scott Jaeck and Logan Vaughn. A replacement for Mahoney will be announced shortly.
