The Humans Becomes the Only Play Running on Broadway

With the September 4 closings of An Act of God and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, today finds Stephen Karam's The Humans the only nonmusical play currently running on Broadway. The production, 2016's Tony Award-winning Best Play, runs at the Schoenfeld Theatre.

The Humans will only hold onto this distinction until next week, when Lewis Black: Black to the Future and Roundabout Theatre Company's The Cherry Orchard, adapted by The Humans' Karam, begin previews on September 12 and September 15, respectively.

Also the recipient of 2016 Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and New York Drama Critics Circle Awards, The Humans follows Erik (played by 2016 Tony winner Reed Birney), who has broken with tradition and brought his Pennsylvania family to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughter's apartment in lower Manhattan. As darkness falls, family tensions reach a peak, and the heart and horrors of the clan are exposed. The company also includes 2016 Tony winner Jayne Houdyshell, Cassie Beck, Lauren Klein, Arian Moayed, and Sarah Steele.

Joe Mantello directs the production, which features a creative team made up of David Zinn (sets), Sarah Laux (costumes), Justin Townsend (lighting), and Fitz Patton (sound). The production had its New York premiere off-Broadway at Roundabout Theatre Company's Laura Pels Theatre in 2015.

The Humans, which began its Broadway run at the Helen Hayes Theatre in February, played its last performance there on July 24. It reopened two weeks later, on August 9, at the Schoenfeld. The Hayes is currently undergoing renovations.
