Groundhog Day, a new musical from the creative team of Broadway's Matilda The Musical, has announced its Broadway plans, scheduling a first preview date for Monday, January 23, 2017, with opening night set for Thursday, March 9.

With a score by Olivier Award winner Tim Minchin, Groundhog Day is inspired by the 1993 film that tells the story of Pittsburgh weatherman Phil Connors, who finds himself caught in a time loop that forces him to repeat the same day, Groundhog Day, over and over.

The musical will reunite Matilda composer Minchin with that show's Tony-winning director, Matthew Warchus, Tony-winning designer, Rob Howell, and choreographer Peter Darling. The book will be penned by Danny Rubin, who coauthored the film's screenplay with Harold Ramis.

The film Groundhog Day starred Bill Murray as Phil Connors, alongside Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliott. Theater, casting information, and additional members of the creative team for the Broadway musical will be announced at later dates. Groundhog Day will be produced on Broadway by Whistle Pig Productions, Scott Rudin, and Columbia Live Stage.
