Ghostlight Records' new Broadway cast recording of the musical Hair , which was released in stores June 23, has debuted at #1 on the Billboard Broadway Chart and at #63 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart, making it the highest chart debut in Ghostlight's history.
The album, which was recorded on April 6 at New York City's Legacy Studios, is produced by Kurt Deutsch and Joel Moss with Bill Rosenfield acting as Executive Producer. The show features a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot. In related news, the complete cast, band, and crew of Hair (a total company of 50) will travel to Los Angeles to perform on NBC's The Tonight Show with Conan O' Brien on Monday, July 13. Director Diane Paulus will stage the musical number specifically to use the entire space of Conan's new NBC set in Universal City. RE: Hair Recording Debuts at #1 on Billboard Broadway Chart; Full Cast to Appear on Tonight Show
The New Broadway Cast Recording of "Hair" captures the magic of the current smash Broadway revival. The ground-breaking show about a tribe of hippies in New Yorks East Village contains classics such as "Aquarius," "Good Morning Starshine," "Let the Sun Shine In," and the title track. The current cast sounds as vibrant as they do live on stage. Examples include, Sasha Allens soaring "Black Boys," Will Swensons joyous "Donna," Caissie Levys heartwrenching "Easy to Be Hard" and
Gavin Creels outstanding "Where Do I Go?" Executive Producer, Bill Rosenfield along with, Galt MacDermot, Hairs original musical composer, include songs that
werent on the shows Original Cast Recording, some of the shows dialogue and both of the shows encores. The current shows Musical Director, Nadia DiGiallonardo, makes MacDermots music sound fresher then ever by using top-of-the-
line musicians. Gerome Ragnis and James Rados lyrics are as relevant as ever on songs suchas "Air""Welcome, sulphar dioxide/Hello carbon
monoxide/The air, the air is everywhere." and "I Believe in Love" "I believe that now is the time/for
all good men/To believe in love." Their songs are philosophical"What a Piece of Work Is Man" and provocative "Sodomy", but also funny "My Conviction" and heartbreaking,"Frank Mills". The New Broadway Cast Recording of "Hair" reminds
us that not only is this the right time to experience its latest revival but to
also hear its timeless songs.
