The Boys From Syracuse to Receive Free Concert Performance in Boston
Boston Landmarks Orchestra will collaborate with Commonwealth Shakespeare Company for a concert performance of The Boys from Syracuse on August 31. The performance closes the 2016 season of Free Wednesday Concerts at the DCR Memorial Hatch Shell.
With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Lorenz Hart, the performance features a new "work in progress" adaptation of George Abbott's book by Lorenz Hart II (nephew of the lyricist) and his wife, Jennifer Hart, with consultation by three-time Tony Award-winning librettist Thomas Meehan. The concert is free and open to the public.
Based on William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, The Boys From Syracuse follows identical twins Antipholus of Syracuse and Antipholus of Ephesus, who were separated as children in a shipwreck. Both have manservants, also twins, both named Dromio. When the Syracuse set arrive in Ephesus, mishaps and mischief ensue as they are mistaken for their brothers by merchants, wives, and mistresses. Perplexed partners, disgruntled courtesans, and outraged constables are left in the duo’s wake before this show's tangled web is unraveled.
The cast will feature Remo Airaldi (Dromio of Syracuse), Jenna Augen (Luciana), Justin Blanchard (Antipholus of Syracuse), Larry Coen (Dromio of Ephesus), Jennifer Ellis (Adrianna), Liliane Klein (Luce), Andy McLeavey (Antipholus of Ephesus), DCR commissioner Leo Roy (Sergeant), and Marc W. Soucy (Aegean). Rounding out the ensemble are Leah Carnow, Serge Clivio, Steven Del Col, Brittany Martel, Kate Penner, Brad Foster Reinking, and Suzi Weisberg.
The creative team includes music director and conductor Christopher Wilkins, codirectors Steven Maler and Adam Sanders, choreographer Peter DiMuro, and costume consultant Brooke Stanton.
