Arlington, Virginia's Signature Theatre has announced casting for its upcoming world premiere of Freaky Friday, a musical adaptation of Mary Rodgers' 1972 novel, which subsequently inspired two hit Disney films.

Heidi Blickenstaff (Something Rotten!) and Emma Hunton (Spring Awakening) will costar as Katherine and Ellie Blake, an overworked mother and her teenage daughter who magically swap bodies and have just one day to put things right again before mom’s big wedding.

Developed by Disney Theatrical Productions expressly for licensing to theaters, the musical features a book by Bridget Carpenter, and music and lyrics by Tony-winning collaborators Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal, If/Then). The premiere production will be directed by Tony nominee Christopher Ashley with choreography by Tony nominee Sergio Trujillo (On Your Feet!).

Blickenstaff comes directly from the Broadway company of Something Rotten! where she originated the role of Bea. She was part of the original creative team for the Tony-nominated and Obie Award-winning Broadway musical [title of show] and Now. Here. This. at the Vineyard Theatre. Her other Broadway credits include Alice Beineke in The Addams Family, Ursula in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, and Susan Hershey in The Full Monty.

Hunton’s credits include the original Broadway production of Spring Awakening, as well as the off-Broadway production of Rent. She also appeared as Elphaba in the first national tour of Wicked and Natalie in the first national tour of Next to Normal.

Performances of Freaky Friday will run at Signature Theatre from October 4-November 13.
