About This Show

Before there were "great rooms" and kitchen islands; before most meals were eaten in the car or in front of the t.v. or the computer, there was The Dining Room–a central gathering place for daily meals, family business and holiday ritual. A.R. Gurney, the chronicler of all things New England WASP, has created a magic cabinet of a play to talk about the transformation of the dining room throughout the 20th Century. The endurance and tractability of the play lies in its incisiveness, wit and tenderness. Add the hat trick of six actors playing over 50 characters in a whirlwind of shifting sketches, laid out from early morning to the wee hours of night, and it’s easy to understand why this extraordinarily well made play is still so popular.
