Through his paintings and his poems (including”The Owl and the Pussycat” and “The Dong with the Luminous Nose”), Lear unconsciously comments on his own life; we discover the private melancholy underpinning his public joie de vivre. We are left with an empathetic pang for a man who could not maintain his own happiness even while providing it to so many for so long.-ks
