About the Show

In The Book Club Play, we meet six members of a book club, and are privy to their
conversations on literature and life. Led by “mother bee” Ana, we follow the book club from
February to December, watching their delicate relationships ebb and flow as they discuss great
works of literature ranging from Moby Dick to Tuesdays with Morrie.
When a new member is introduced into their book club without enduring the typical vetting
process, the very fibers of their relationships are tested while the audience witnesses every
celebratory high and poignant low. With prolific insight into the culture of book clubs,
playwright Karen Zacarías brings these larger-than-life characters vibrantly into existence and
begs the question ‘why do we read’?
