About This Show

Robert Sella stars in the title role of Don Carlos. The play is an emotionally charged tragedy by Friedrich Schiller that takes place in the royal courts of Spain 1568. Themes of freedom and idealism clash with power, leading to an inevitable outcome of betrayal. While struggling to maintain his sovereignty over the Spanish Netherlands, King Philip II contends with a threat much closer to the throne: the Crown Prince. Eager to liberate the Netherlanders from his father’s control, Don Carlos is also in love with his stepmother, Elizabeth of Valois. Clouded by their private passions, Philip and Carlos are forced into an endgame with mortal consequences. Michael Kahn directs.
