The Elephant Man

Winner of every major drama award, including three Tony Awards, The Elephant Man is the epic true story of John Merrick, a grotesquely deformed 19th Century Englishman. Although frightening to look at and hard to understand, Merrick was sensitive and bright. Through Merrick, playwright Bernard Pomerance elegantly examines the notion of true beauty while offering an example of human dignity in the face of unspeakable pain. The Elephant Man is directed by Chris Hanna, Virginia Stage Company’s Artistic Director.
