The Bilitis Project

The Bilitis Project is a concert/ performance of two contemporary music standouts – Eve Beglarian and Phil Kline – performing a DW co-commissioned work reminiscent of 1970’s concept albums. Beglarian and Kline have created a new song-cycle that interprets the legendary love story of Bilitis in all of its tragedy, hope, fulfillment and devastation. Pierre Louys invented the story, supposedly created by a contemporary to Greek poet Sappho, to complicate the simple tale of “girl finds love, loses love” by introducing a homoerotic storyline. Beglarian and Kline re-imagine this historical narrative through male, female, straight and queer perspectives creating a complex and interesting exploration of desire, love and loneliness.
