In Chay Yew’s Red, Sonja, a middle-aged romance novelist, travels to her native Shanghai in search of a more meaningful subject for her next book. While there, she encounters a dilapidated theater where she is greeted by two people from her past: Hua Wai Mun, an aging Beijing opera star, and Ling, a young woman in the Red Guard who, during the Cultural Revolution, was dedicated to purging the Chinese culture of dissidents like Hua.
There is no 2:00pm matinee on Saturday, May 24, and no 7:30pm performances on Sundays, May 25 and June 8. There are additional performances on Wednesday, June 4 at 2:00pm.
