The Subject Was Roses

About the Show

In a middle-class Bronx apartment in 1946, the Cleary’s are welcoming home Timmy after three years of Army service in World War II. The homecoming rekindles unresolved family issues, and Timmy is forced to confront the addictions, violence, and unspoken slights that have festered in his family for years. The Subject Was Roses examines the painful process of reintegration into society after taking part in war. Although the play was first presented at the Royale Theatre in New York City in 1964, the topic couldn’t be timelier.

The Subject Was Roses stars TV soap opera heart-throb Tom Pelphrey as the troubled, young man Timmy.
