An aging lawyer, longing for his estranged son, engages a wizard who conjures scenes of romance, adventure, and peril from the younger man’s life, in this meta-theatrical tale of love and regret, passion and magic. Corneille’s original, entitled L’Illusion Comique and first performed at the Hôtel de Bourgogne in 1636, shows his literary mastery and innovative theatricality, blending comedy and tragedy, and exploring timeless themes of love, family, and the very nature of reality, in this wildly entertaining tale.
