About This Show

White Plains Performing Arts Center presents a new series, Broadway in Concert, featuring exciting concert presentations of the world’s most beloved theatre musicals staged by and starring some of NYC’s finest talent. As the inaugural production, WPPAC is presenting the epic 1998 Tony Award-winning musical Ragtime, directed by Sidney J. Burgoyne.

The musical features a book by Terrence McNally, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and music by Stephen Flaherty. It is based on the novelof the same name by E.L. Doctorow.

Ragtime paints a nostalgic and powerful portrait of life in turn-of-the-century
America. It interweaves three distinct stories
that poignantly illustrate history’s timeless
contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom
and prejudice, hope and despair, and love and hate.

The Tony-winning score is just as diverse as
the Melting Pot of America that it seeks to
recreate. It draws upon traditional Jewish folk
sounds to color the haunting music and
yearning lyrics of the immigrants, Vaudeville’s
outrageous style to capture the spectacle
of Evelyn Nesbit, and Joplin and Jazz to
invoke the enlivened spirit of Harlem.
