RENKU—the kindred-spirit New York trio of saxophonist Michaël Attias, master bassist John Hébert and drummer Satoshi Takeishi—was named after a collaborative, improvised form of Japanese poetry wherein epiphanies spin around the table according to a strict structure of breathed syllables. With its first concert dating back to 2003, RENKU is by far Attias’ longest-running band and it just keeps getting better and deeper, with its own special blend of kinetic chiaroscuro, telepathy and grace. Over the years, the trio has formed the core of several larger groups, ranging from quartet to an eleven-piece. Tonight, the trio will be joined by two master improvisers: Eric McPherson on drums and a Special Guest from Berlin on vibraphone, to create a beautiful pulsating tapestry for your listening pleasure.

Splitting his time between New York City and Berlin, saxophonist/composer Michaël Attias has earned a reputation as one of the most questing and keenly collaborative figures on the international Jazz and Improvised Music scene. His ten albums as leader display an aesthetic of enormous range, emotional power and invention. The most recent are Quartet Music Vols I & II (Out of Your Head, 2024), the alto saxophone/piano solo *échos la nuit* (Out of Your Head, 2019) and Nerve Dance (Clean Feed, 2017) with John Hébert, Aruán Ortiz and Nasheet Waits . As a sideman, he has worked with such luminaries as Paul Motian,

Anthony Braxton, Oliver Lake, Masabumi Kikuchi, Angelica Sanchez, Michael Formanek, Tony Malaby, Fay Victor, and many others. Attias’ compositions have been covered by such artists such Eric Revis, Anthony Coleman, and most recently Kris Davis with Esperanza Spalding. He has also written for orchestra and big band and created several live electroacoustic scores and sound designs for theatre.
