The World is Round is set in Florence in 1492. As morals and time-honoured religious structures are being eroded by the Renaissance spirit, two antagonistic factions have developed. One is a new liberal humanism committed to science and progress (those who believe that the world is round); the other is a nostalgic respect for the values of the past (who believe the world to be flat). This turmoil sets the stage for romance, infidelity, book burning and the rise of a controversial Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola as political reformer and moral arbiter.
