About the Show
The Motor Company, producers of site-responsive theater in New York City public spaces since 2011, present the world premiere of
(the giant sleeps) Between Two Rivers by Ben Holbrook. Written specifically for performance on the Dutch Settlement site in The Battery on its 400th anniversary,
(the giant sleeps) Between Two Rivers is a playful, poetic look at the hopes and inner fire that fuels everyone who lands on New York’s shores. The play jumps between the distant past, when three ambitious New Netherlanders land and try to make their way as employees of the Dutch West India Company, and the not-so-distant future, when a gaggle of competing city officials try to navigate the shifting tides of climate change and urban renewal. Throughout it all, a waterlogged newcomer washes ashore and searches for purpose in this new world.
